Pressure Vessels
An Essential Material to Make the Fuel Tanks of Fuel Cell Vehicles Lighter and Safer.
Fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) can drive for over 500 km with just one charge of hydrogen gas, a similar distance to those achieved by gasoline vehicles on one tank of gasoline. For these vehicles, a high-pressure hydrogen tank (CHG) at 70 MPa (CHG) is required. Carbon fiber is the only material that allows the manufacturing of such a high-pressure tank that is also light enough to be installed in an automobile.
Pressure vessels are normally manufactured with the filament winding method, and are made of an aluminum or plastic liner with carbon fiber wrapped around it. Burst pressure, a key factor of any high-pressure container, is mainly determined by the tensile strength of the carbon fibers.
The high tensile strength of TORAYCA™ carbon fibers strengthens the CHG tank against the extraordinarily high burst pressure of compressed hydrogen. TORAYCA™ makes CHG tanks stronger and safer.
Why TORAY Materials?
Our material solutions for hydrogen pressure vessels offer many benefits to processing, design and lightweighting.
High Tensile Strength
The high tensile strength of TORAYCA™ carbon fibers strengthens the CHG tank against the extraordinarily high burst pressure of compressed hydrogen. TORAYCA™ makes CHG tanks stronger and safer.
Lightweight
TORAYCA™ carbon fiber allows CHG tanks to be lighter and more compact. It contributes to the fuel efficiency and interior comfort of a variety of vehicles.
High Stability
The highly stable properties and processability of TORAYCA™ carbon fiber allows CHG tank design to be more flexible and makes the tank manufacturing process smoother.
A Reliable Partner
Major OEMs around the world have chosen TORAYCA™ carbon fiber for their FCVs. We are a reliable partner to these companies, and are committed to a hydrogen-powered society.
